Family Memories....
Day 27
My dogs...
Our first dog was Schlitz, he was a dachshund. My parents both really liked dachshunds. I really don't have a lot of memories of him other than he slept with me and I remember when he died and we went to pick our new dog Gretchen out.
Gretchen was supposed to be a pure bread dachshund and looked like it when she was puppy but as she grew she didn't look like a full bread. We didn't have papers, so who knows.
She was a great dog, a fun dog! She loved to play to fetch and would actually want to do this for hours. She also loved opening Christmas presents and somehow she knew which ones were hers. We finally had to keep hers put up until Christmas day because she would sneak under the tree and open hers...she was worse than a kid!
Gretchen loved sleeping under the blankets. I'm not sure how she could breathe! Even if there wasn't a person in bed she would crawl under the blankets. My mom made her bed everyday when she got up a trait that she passed on to me. Anyway, Gretchen would go to the top of the bed by the pillows and find the opening and crawl down to the middle of the bed. It was funny because there was a big lump right smack in the middle of the bed. It was Gretchen!
We got Licky and Buffy while we still had Gretchen. This was the only time we had three dogs. They over lapped a bit. Gretchen was young when we got Licky and much older when we got Buffy.
Licky was half Dachshund and we are guessing Scotty. She was very fluffy. She reminds me a lot of Lucy. Very calm and loving. No tricks, but she did like to play ball. A good loving lap dog.
Buffy was a Basset Hound and was so cute when got her! She was so soft and sweet! This was my dog. We did everything together and she was never too far away from me or my dad. She loved the big dog bones! Oh, did she ever goober when she ate or drank anything! Those big cheeks! Yuck! I had to keep a few towels around!
She was our escape artist too. My dad tried to find out where she was getting out but we never did find out where or how...it didn't make sense!
She would go up to railroad tracks, not too far from our house, to a small business and they would call us about once a week and say Buffy is here visiting. We would go pick her up her and bring her back home. There were a few times she would walk back home and would be sitting on our front porch waiting for us. Silly doggie!
Then there was Sweet Pea and she was a very quiet loving dog. She looks a lot like Lucy! My mom and dad often called Lucy, Sweet Pea by mistake. They are a lot alike too!
They were all great dogs!
